In C57BL/6 mice exposed to 25 Schistosoma mansoni cercariae, a significant response to soluble egg antigen was first detected in week 6 as a T- and (mainly) B-cell rosette forming (RFC) response in the mediastinal nodes and in the hepatic and mesenteric nodes in week 4, although in the latter the B-cell RFC were in very large numbers and persisted for a long time. In the spleen the response was after 2 to 3 weeks but the T-cell RFC response was greater. There was a preferential production of IgE responsive cells in the hepatic and mesenteric nodes equalling or surpassing IgM responses, while the IgA response was confined to the mediastinal and mesenteric nodes. The B-cell response showed a maturational progression from rosette-forming cells through rosette antibody-forming cells to plaque-forming cells.
