Losses of surface fluids from lumbricid earthworms

Losses of surface fluids from lumbricid earthworms

Pedobiologia 21(6): 417-426

ISSN/ISBN: 0031-4056

Drying curves were constructed for living and preserved specimens of Allolobophora longa, Eisenia foetida, Lumbricus rubellus and L. terrestris, and the mobility of specimens of each species was measured at different body moisture contents. Moisture losses are greater for lumbricids that are small (juveniles, and adults of small species), thin and active, than for those that are large, thick or inactive; this is related to contrasting modes of life of different species, and for L. terrestris of adults and juveniles. Liquid lost from burrowing lumbricids as adhesive surface exudates may contribute to soil aggregation.
