Metabolic activity in leaf intercalary meristems of tall fescue genotypes

Dark respiration rates (RD), total nonstructural carbohydrate (TNC), and soluble protein (PS) conc. of leaf intercalary meristems and segments of elongating tall fescue leaves were measured in an attempt to relate these characteristics to genotypic differences in leaf elongation rate (LER). RD of meristems was 5 times higher than RD of collared leaf blades. TNC conc. were 35% of meristem dry wt., and like RD, declined in successive acropetal leaf segments.
