Methods for estimating biomass of Sahelian herbaceous vegetation: application to Mare d'Oursi, Upper Volta

In 1977 biomass measurements were made on 10-40 plots of 1, 3, 4, 8, 12 or 16 m2 in 3 areas of different grassland vegetation types in N. Upper Volta. In areas of continuous cover, biomass followed a normal distribution, while in discontinous cover distribution followed a log-normal pattern. A sample of 30-40 plots of 1 m2 gave the most accurate results with 10-13% accuracy in continuous cover and 20% in discontinuous cover. A heterogeneity index closely linked to cover type was derived.
