Results of 7 balance experiments on 60 lactating cows in 18 groups, and of 3 experiments on 21 dry cows, showed that the calcium requirement of cows in their last month of pregnancy could be reduced by 25 to 30% of that recommended by the Soviet Ministry of Agriculture. There was no decrease in retention and utilization of Ca or of phosphorus when the dietary Ca:P ratio was reduced from 1:1 to 1:1.3. Immediately after calving the Ca:P ratio was increased to 1.3-1.5:1.
