In the course of breeding sugarbeet, Lupinus angustifolius, L. luteus and barley for high yield, changes were found to have occurred in leaf and stem structure in the direction of increased xeromorphism (greater amount of mechanical tissue, shorter distance between the vascular bundles, smaller chlorenchyma cells and reduced water content of the tissues). These changes in structure generally showed recessive inheritance.
