Natural mortality in Scots pine stands suffering from industrial air pollution in the Upper Silesian industrial region

Studies were made in 1971-76 on moist sites near a zinc works in Poland. All dead trees were felled twice yearly. Total losses over the period at different mean concentrations of atmospheric SO2 were: 0.16 mg/m3 air, 74% (20-60 yr old) and 67% (60-100 yr old); 0.12 mg/m3, 36% and 74% respectively; 0.09 mg/m3, 9% and 14%; and 0.06 mg/m3, 9% and 6%.
