Nematode resistance transmission of diploid Beta vulgaris-procumbens hybrids and the production of homozygous nematode-resistant plants

Resistance to Heterodera schachtii is transmitted in diploid sugar beet hybrids by female gametes (24%) and by male gametes (12%). Resistance transmission of 17-18% was obtained from most hybrids between resistant females and susceptible pollinators. The self-sterile and self-fertile F1 hybrids transmitted resistance to 25-50% of the F2 plants. Many hybrids had a transmission rate of 32-40% but only a few reached 45-50%.
