Wheat Kolibri received 0, 60, 100 or 140 kg N/ha, oats Ponta 0, 50, 75 or 100 kg/ha and barley Mazurka or Georgie 40, 70 or 100 kg/ha. Following wheat or grain maize, the highest av. yields were obtained with 100, 75 and 70-100 kg N/ha for wheat, oats and barley, resp. Opt. rates varied with crop conditions. On shallow soils, relatively high N rates gave the best results. After the wet winter of 1977-8, higher N rates proved justified.
