Abstract
183 South African Mutton Merino ewes were allotted to 3 groups, and were given a 40-mg MAP intravaginal sponge for 14 days. The 1st group received no further treatment (controls), while groups 2 and 3 received 300 and 600 IU PMSG resp. 24 h before sponge withdrawal. In the 3 groups resp., the CR was 68.6, 79.5 and 60.3% (P <0.05), the number of liveborn lambs per 100 females mated 96.3, 107.2 and 93.1, (P <0.05), the proportion of stillbirths 3.2, 2.0 and 17.3% (P <0.05), and the number of liveborn lambs per 100 females lambing 134.6, 140.5 and 155.9 (P <0.01).
