Abstract
The role of part-time farming in the agricultural evolution of developed countries is discussed. Part-time farming has been explained by different authors either as a result of the historical process of the disintegration of the peasantry (Marxist), or as an adaptive form, used by peasant families at certain points in their demographic cycle (Chayanov). The results of works which studied the stability of part-time farming in Europe are summarized, and the influence of this stability on agriculture is analyzed.
