Pasture improvement in spear grass country

The effect of improving native spear grass pasture in Queensland was investigated over several yr using different grass and legume spp., mainly lucerne, Macroptilium atropurpureum Siratro, Stylosanthes guianensis, S. humilis and buffel grass. Various trials with different stocking rates and use of P, S, and Mo fertilizer are described. Cattle on native pasture gained approx. 100 kg/head yr compared with 140-200 kg/head for those grazing buffel-Siratro or buffel + N pasture.
