Physiological and agronomic response of a grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) hybrid to elevated night temperatures

In 2 greenhouse and 1 field trial, night temp. of 26.5 deg and 32 deg C were imposed for 4- to 5-day durations from panicle initiation to flowering on sorghum RS 671. At 32 deg panicle dry wt., grain yield, number of grains and harvest index were reduced by approx. 14, 14, 19 and 11%, resp., and seed size increased by 12%. The effect of 26.5 deg on these variables was marginal. At both higher temp., number of days to maturity, DM production and plant ht. were reduced.
