The Nira valley receives only c. 200 mm of rainfall from 1 June to 15 Sept. and thereafter an additional 250 mm up to the end of Oct. As a result of this peculiar rainfall pattern, the monsoon crops not only need irrigation during their growth period, but they are also damaged by the late rains of Sept. and Oct., when they are ready for harvest. Trials in 1975-9 showed that early pigeonpea maturing in the 1st wk of Nov. were ideal as a monsoon crop in this area.
