The abundance of epigeal Macrotermes bellicosus colonies on a 6 ha study area in Southern Guinea savanna in Nigeria was 6.45 ha-1. Nest distribution was random, with no suggestion of over-dispersion to indicate intraspecific competition, even with the inclusion of dead mounds, of which there were 34.17 ha-1. The maximum life-span of colonies was estimated from mound growth measurements to be about fifteen to twenty years.
