Brief treatment of unstacked pea thylakoids with pronase increased the conc. of MgCl2 needed for restacking from 5 to 15 mM but had no effect on intramembrane particle diam. or on modifications in the size distribution of these particles during restacking. More extensive pronase treatment prevented restacking with 5 mM MgCl2, reduced av. intramembrane particle size and eliminated alterations in the size distributions of these particles. It was concluded that a stroma-exposed, protease-sensitive portion of the light-harvesting chlorophyll complex is involved in cation mediated thylakoid adhesion.
