Reasons are discussed for the incidence of severe damage to maize by the maize pyralid (Ostrinia nubilalis (Hb.)) in several regions of France since 1960, despite the development of suitable insecticidal treatments and warning systems. Among these is the absence of natural enemies of the pyralid as a result of the use of insecticides. In 1979 and 1980, despite the advice of a special working group, large areas were treated with pyrethroids against O. nubilalis.
