Reducing tree size and increasing bearing in sour and sweet cherries by means of summer pruning

Reducing tree size and increasing bearing in sour and sweet cherries by means of summer pruning

Lucrarile Stiintifice ale Institutului de Cercetare si Productie pentru Pomicultura, Pitesti 8: 207-221

Four-year trials in an intensive orchard were carried out with young trees of 6 sour cherry cvs planted at 1250 trees/ha. Five-year trials were carried out with young trees of 6 sweet cherry cvs planted at 666 trees/ha. The crowns were trained in several ways. Pruning consisted of pinching young shoots down to 6-8 leaves. In trees of moderate vigour pinching was started in the 2nd year after planting and in vigorous trees in the 3rd or 4th year.
