Report on the investigation of unearthed ancient rice in the middle-lower reaches of the Yangtse River



Yunnan Agricultural Science and Technology Yunnan Nongye Keji (6): 1-6



Investigations were carried out at 7 sites in Hunan, Jiangxi, Zhejiang and Jiangsu Provinces and Shanghai in 1980. Determination by 14C indicated that carbonized rice seeds from Lojiagu and Tongsiang County, Zhejiang were c. 7170 yr old which was 1600 yr earlier than those found in other countries. The seeds were small with a 1000-seed wt. of 20-21 g. The subsp. hsien and keng were present 6000-7000 yr ago. with c. 70-80% hsien in a cultivated population. The proportion decreased with time.
