Requirements and variation in food intake of diabetic children and adolescents on a regulated diet

Requirements and variation in food intake of diabetic children and adolescents on a regulated diet

Monatsschrift fur Kinderheilkunde 128(2): 93-99

On 10 consecutive days foods given to 69 insulin-dependent subjects, in 5 age groups from 3.3 to 17.9 years, were weighed and nutrient contents were calculated. Diets were geared and regularly readjusted to individual appetite and requirement, with scope for interchange of foods. All snacks were noted. Energy intake of boys increased with age, but girls of 9 to 12 years ingested more than those of 12 to 14 or over. Amounts tended to be less than those recommended or given in the literature.
