Agroforestry land-use systems may (1) avert the degradation of 'fragile' environments, (2) enhance the long-term productivity of existing agricultural lands and (3) make existing forested regions more productive for rural population. Research into the possibilities of changing existing land-use systems to agroforestry, or of devising entirely new agroforestry systems, must take into account the complexities of multiple land-use involving trees/shrubs and herbaceous crops and grasses.
