In field trials in 1975-7 at Valu lui Traian on a chestnut chernozem, maize was grown with a range of irrigation treatments. With no irrigation, irrigation at 50% field capacity (FC) (243 and 293 mm water) and at different phases (255 mm water) grain yields were 4.58, 11.20, 12.32 and 11.08 t/ha, resp.
