Residual effects of atrazine applied to maize on a subsequent sugar beet crop treated with different weed control programmes

Maize was treated with (a) 0.625, (b) 1.375 or (c) 2.125 kg atrazine/ha in 1977 and (d) 1.0, (e) 1.75 or (f) 2.5 kg/ha in 1979 and the residual effects of the treatments on sugar beet subjected to various weed control programmes in 1978 and 1980 were studied. In 1978, all herbicide treatments applied to the sugar beet increased root and sugar yields. The increases were significant in (a) and (b) but not in (c).
