Resistance in tobacco to the tobacco hornworm

During the screening of 1500 Nicotiana tabacum cultivars, breeding lines and hybrid populations between 1971 and 1978, 14 were found which seemed to possess a useful degree of resistance to Manduca sexta. Among these forms, compared in a single trial in 1978, a Ti1112 X Ti7 F3 hybrid population and a Ti1112 X McNair 944 F1 were the most resistant. The former showed low damage rates throughout the growing season but the latter only towards the end.
