Resistance of fibre flax to spring frosts

Resistance of fibre flax to spring frosts

Trudy po Prikladnoi Botanike, Genetike i Selektsii 66(1): 61-66

Plants of fibre flax Svetoch and VNIIL-17 were exposed to 0 to -8 deg C for 1 or 2 h at 1 day old or when they had 1-2 or 5-6 pairs of leaves. Svetoch was considerably more resistant than VNIIL-17 and the resistance of both increased with age. In Svetoch, 32.5, 9.6 and 3.8%, resp., of plants at the 3 growth stages were killed by exposure to -8 deg for 2h; corresponding values in VNIIL-17 were 92.8, 54.8 and 15%. Mortality was considerably greater after 2 than after 1h exposure.
