Resistance of some grain sorghum cultivars to sorghum aphid injury

The sorghum aphid, Longiunguis sacchari Zehntner, is one of the major pests of grain sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] in Taiwan. The purpose of the present investigation was to study the resistance of sorghum lines to the sorghum aphid and to understand the inheritance of resistance in the sorghum line 2R. Eleven sorghum lines were evaluated for resistance to the aphid. Selections from 2R, 5R and HB 37 sustained the least damage (< 1.8) and were regarded as resistant lines. Several other lines, including Taichung No. 5, HB 31, 47R and 57R, displayed significantly less damage than that of susceptible lines 78A, 803 16R and Taichung No. 3, ranging from grade 4.7-5.5. The inheritance of resistance in sorghum to the aphid was studied by using a bulk seedling test, i.e., 3-leaf-old seedlings were infested with 4th- and 5th- instar nymphs of the aphid, in net cages. Tests with F1 and F2 progenies of 80A X 2R parents of a new cultivar Taichung No. 5, revealed that resistance in cultivar 2R was controlled by a single dominant gene which was designated as Sal. Results of aphid confinement tests on 80A, 2R and the F2 seedlings of 80A X 2R indicated not only that the resistant parent 2R is characterized by a high degree of antibiosis to the aphids, but, also, that 2R may possess a single dominant gene which is resistant to the aphids.
