Resistance of some poplar clones to vole damage assessed through feeding experiments

Resistance of some poplar clones to vole damage assessed through feeding experiments

Folia Forestalia, Institutum Forestale Fenniae (339): 12

Three species of Microtus and three of Clethrionomys were fed with 8 clones of rooted poplar seedlings, and with branches of Betula pubescens, Alnus incana, willow and aspen. C. rufocanus ate as much B. pubescens and willow as poplar, but all other species preferred poplar. A. incana was eaten the least. Green leaves and young shoots of poplar were preferred by all species. M. arvalis consumed the most poplar roots, and M. agrestis and C. glareolus the least.
