Two physiological races of Plasmopara halstedii are distinguished, the European (race 1) and the American (race 2), each with its own distribution, specific genes for resistance and differential varieties. Resistance is thought to be dominant and controlled by a gene pair, though some evidence in the literature points to a more complex system, including no fewer than three independent genes for resistance.
