In trials in two sites in Mexico in 1976 and 1977, it was determined that the mean weekly ratings for plant damage of whole plots under conditions of multiple insect infestations from the seedling to the preflowering stage were the best criterion for selection for resistance to S. frugiperda. Small increases in resistance to leaf feeding were obtained following selection and recombination among full-sib families from four CIMMYT Advanced Unit populations.
