Experiments in a soil bin showed that the resistance to the flow of air or N2 varied according to the nozzle size of the injector, soil hardness and depth of soil bed. In a sandy, dry soil with a weak cohesion between the particles, spouting to the surface was observed, while in a wet sandy soil or clay loam some cavities were produced round the nozzle exit and the soil was displaced. If the clay soil exceeded 30% m.c., horizontal cracks were produced with a low flow of gas.
