The necrotic syndrome on tomato induced by CMV is associated with the presence of RNA-5. When added to viral genomes I17F, K and M inducing fern leaf symptoms, RNA-5 of various strs. (I17N, D, TL and S) caused necrosis on inoculated plants. Str. R of CMV could not induce necrosis although much RNA-5 was synthesized. On inoculating I17F, K or M with CMV-R satellite RNA mosaic and fern leaf induced by the genome alone were greatly reduced.
