Selection index for dairy traits using net profit as economic values

Selection index for dairy traits using net profit as economic values

Paper, 30th Annual Meeting, European Association for Animal Production (C3.6): 3

A selection index for dairy cattle is proposed on the pricing system for milk in the Netherlands, where there are positive prices for the quantity of milk fat and protein and a negative price for total milk volume. The economic criterion used is income over feed cost for different milk components. A method is described for calculating energy requirements to produce different milk components. Differences in response of various milk traits to selection on different indices are calculated.
