Serum lipids and fecal steroids in patients with celiac disease: effects of gluten-free diet and cholestyramine

Serum lipids and fecal steroids in patients with celiac disease: effects of gluten-free diet and cholestyramine

Gastroenterology 78(6): 1518-1525

Cholesterol metabolism was investigated by measuring faecal neutral sterol and bile acid excretion in 24 patients with coeliac disease before and after a gluten-free diet and cholestyramine treatment. The mean faecal bile acid output was normal; values were modestly increased in the most severe disease only. Thus, the presence of ileal dysfunction was infrequent.
