New nitrogenase-positive bacteria which could not grow on N-free media but grew better on basal media + casamino acid than on media + ammonium ions were isolated from paddy soils around rice IR26. Percentages isolated were 2.4, 37.5, 76.0 and 81.0% from the rhizosphere soil, from washings of macerated rice stems, from washings of rice roots and from washings of macerated rice roots, resp.
