Status of plague in the Americas, 1970-1980

Status of plague in the Americas, 1970-1980

Epidemiological Bulletin 2(3): 5-8

Information is given on the incidence of plague (caused by Yersinia pestis) in the Americas in 1968-80, and the distribution of reported cases in Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru and the USA is shown on maps, these being the only countries in the area reporting cases in man since 1968. The epidemiology of the disease in the Andean region is unique in that outbreaks have occurred in places where domestic rodents are strikingly absent and very few wild rodents have been observed.
