Studies on Azotobacter chroococcum. I. Morphological, biochemical and physiological characteristics of Azotobacter chroococcum

Azotobacter strains were isolated from the rhizosphere soil of different agricultural crops. Their morphological and biochemical properties were studied in detail to identify efficient strains for the preparation of bio-fertilizers. All the organisms were Gram-negative. There were both pigmented and non-pigmented forms. They also differed in their main physiological attributes, such as nitrogen fixation and the synthesis of gibberellic acid (GA) and IAA-like compounds.
