Studies on ecology of Rhizoctonia solani, the causal organism of sheath blight of rice

Many sclerotia were trapped floating on irrigation water in Taiwan paddy fields 1 month after transplanting. From numbers on stubble an estimate of 31 X 105 sclerotia/ha field was obtained. On the surface of field soil sclerotia survived for >16 months, buried >2 cm deep for <8 months. The pathogen survived on some weeds and on winter crops of potatoes and on winter crops of potatoes in some paddy fields.
