Studies on humic acids decomposing streptomycetes. II. Efficiency of different species in decomposition

A total of 28 humus-decomposing Streptomyces sp. were tested for their activity in the degradation of humic acids. The study involved the estimation of CO2 production in sand cultures, the determination of mycelium dry weight, organic carbon, and optical density in liquid cultures. Humic acid decomposition followed a cyclic pattern of changes; its activity was higher at the beginning of mineralization, after which it proceeded at rather lower rates.
