Testing the climatic resistance characteristics of conifers for provenance investigations

A method of testing for frost hardiness in one-year-old seedlings by means of artificial freezing is described. By subjecting seedlings to different degrees of freezing severity, their resistance to autumn, winter or spring frosts can be assessed. Another method is described for testing drought resistance in two-year-old seedlings under simulated conditions of so-called "frost drought".
