The middleman: a major source of controversy in the food industry

Federal Reserve Bank of St Louis Review 62(5): 21-29

Criticism of the role of the US middleman in the food processing and marketing industry has appeared in numerous studies, hearings and reports. Implicit in the criticism is the view that food prices to consumers are established by the middleman independently of farm commodity price movements.
