The Anti-Coronary Club: 1957 to 1972

The Anti-Coronary Club: 1957 to 1972

American Journal of Clinical Nutrition 33(6): 1183-1191

Lower coronary heart disease incidence among men in the active experimental groups of two age categories studied were attributed to adherence to the Prudent Diet. This diet was designed to avoid an excess of empty calories, saturated fat, and food cholesterol while providing a favorable balance of nutrients. It seems reasonable to correlate the lower disease incidence rates with reduced serum cholesterol levels. A profile of the 50- to 59-year-old candidate for this disease includes hypercholesterolemia, a familial history of the disease, and smoking. The 40- to 49-year-old profile includes hypercholesterolemia, hypertension, and smoking.
