The introductory section on the human and economic background explains how up till the 1950s Australia's exports were 80% agricultural with the UK a major market. Even in 1980 some 45% of exports are agricultural, some 95% of wool production being exported as well as large amounts of beef, wheat, dairy products, sugar and fruit. Following UK accession to EC, Australia's exports of beef, sheepmeat, cereals, sugar and fresh fruit to the Nine fell by 80%.
