The development of Septoria tritici Rob. ex Desm. in leaf tissues of winter wheat

Pycnospores of S. tritici (Mycosphaerella graminicola) germinated most frequently near or on stomatal cells. Germ tubes penetrated through the stomata or less frequently through epidermal cells, without forming appressoria. Penetration was observed 24-36 h after inoculation. Initially growth in the leaf tissue was very slow but after 12-13 days all intercellular tissues were completely filled with mycelium.
