In 1971-9, application of sprinkler irrigation at 50% usable field capacity, from flag leaf emergence to the wax-ripe grain stage, increased av. yield of maize grain from 4.59 to 7.09 t/ha and increased av. grain number/ear by 8% and 1000-grain wt. by 4.5%.
