The effects of electrolyte concentration and sodium adsorption ratio on phosphate retention by soils

The effects were studied of electrolyte concentration (C) and sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) on P retention by 3 arid-zone, surface soil samples differing in texture. The soil samples were previously equilibrated with NaCl-CaCl2 mixed salt solutions to render samples of different SAR values. Apparently, P retention by the 3 soils increases as C increases or as SAR decreases. These effects should be considered when appraising P fertilizer application to salt-affected soils.
