Out of 879 varieties and lines obtained from CIMMYT and sown at La Platina in 1979, 481 were highly resistant to E. graminis under field conditions and, as a group, outyielded all more susceptible groups. Losses of grain yield attributable to E. graminis infection averaged 5.3%. Out of 206 lines observed in the field, 86 completely escaped the attack of Helminthosporium tritici-repentis, the mean yield loss in the others being 6.6%.
