The effects of sowing on 3, 17 or 31 May at 3, 6 or 12 kg seed/ha on the agronomic characteristics of 5 of B. napus were studied at Edmonton and Ellerslie in 1976-7. Delayed sowing increased vegetative and total yield but decreased seed yield, harvest index, plant density and number of racemes/plant and /m2. Sowing date had no effect on seed yield/plant, 1000-seed wt. or plant ht. Increased sowing rate increased plant density and number of racemes/m2, but decreased harvest index, racemes/plant, seed yield/plant and plant ht. Sowing rate had no effect on seed, vegetative or total yield or 1000-seed wt.
