Tomatoes make efficient use of applied nitrogen



California Agriculture 34(11/12): 24-25



Tomatoes, selection UC 82 B, grown in beds receiving furrow irrigation, were fertilized with labelled N at 0-200 lb/acre, or at 50 or 100 lb/acre + nitrapyrin (a nitrification inhibitor), and petiole N content was measured at intervals of about 3 weeks during the season. Total petiole N did not reflect differences in fertilizer treatments except at 35 days, but 15N level in the petioles increased with increasing fertilizer rate.
