Vapor density and water loss from eggs of the range caterpillar, Hemileuca oliviae

As compared to water loss from eggs of several other species, eggs of Hemileuca oliviae Ckll., a pest of shortgrass prairie, were quite resistant to desiccation. The eggs lacked aeropyles and gas exchange apparently occurred through the micropyle. Loss of water from eggs was stimulated by exposure to low vapour densities or to high temperatures. Temperature stimulated embryonic development, and vapour densities as low as 7.6 g/m3 stimulated eclosion.
