In diallels amongst lines in each of three maturity groups studied in 1977-1978, general combining ability estimates were significant for protein and fibre contents. Some lines combined high protein content and low fibre content. Within a given maturity group, there was no correlation between dry matter yield and fibre content, but the two characters were positively correlated in all the material taken as a whole. Dry matter yield was negatively correlated with protein content.
